According to numerous online forums, a lot of users are facing Error 56 on their iOS devices, mostly iPhones and iPads, while trying to restore their device or updating them using iTunes.

While updating your iPhone/iPad, you’ll usually get an alert message saying ” iPhone/iPad cannot be updated. An unknown error occurred 56” or you will see “Software Update Failed: An error occurred while downloading iOS 9.3.2“. Your device will fail to update and sometimes even stop working normally. The update usually goes smoothly at the beginning but fails with error 56 in the latter part.

While restoring, an error box that reads “The iPhone/iPad could not be restored. An error occurred (56)” will be displayed on the screen.

How To Fix Error 56 on iPhone and iPad?

Even though Error 56 is bothersome, it can be fixed without much effort. Go through each of the following methods:

Check the Point of connection (USB cable and the port)

One of the most common reasons behind Error 56 is a damaged USB cable or Port. Make sure that the port, cable, and connector, all are working fine. Most of the time, the wire is faulty. If the wire is different from what you got when you first purchased the device or isn’t an Apple product, replace it with an original one.

The cable should be certified and authentic. You’d be surprised to see how easily replacing the cable fixes the issue. Ensure that there are no loose connections. Unplug the cable that connects to your device from the USB port of your computer and then reconnect it. Remove battery packs or cases.

Restart your Phone and PC

Sometimes Error 56 might be just a short-term glitch. So restart both your iPhone/iPad and your PC. If the issue really is temporary, restarting your devices will most likely solve them. Disconnect your devices, restart them and then connect them again when they power up.

Update your iTunes

When your iTunes isn’t up-to-date, it can also lead to errors like this. Make sure the version of iTunes you’re using is updated.

Navigate to Help -> Check for updates

Sometimes even when your iTunes is updated, your PC can be outdated subsequently leading to not supporting the latest versions of software. Ensure that this isn’t the case.

If none of the above fixes work, try disabling your antivirus software. Another thing you can do is try restoring/updating your iPhone/iPad using a different PC.

We hope that these simple steps have helped you to Fix Error 56 on iPhone and iPad.
